Join us for an introduction to steeking with Paige — where we cut our colorwork. WHAT?!
Yes, actually cut our knitted work. On purpose.
Steeking is the technique that lets a colorwork sweater open up into a cardigan, sleeve, or neckline — you knit the whole piece in the round, floats and all, then reinforce and cut straight through it. It sounds like sacrilege the first time you hear it. It is, genuinely, one of the most satisfying things you can do to a piece of knitting.
Paige will teach you how to reinforce a steek by machine and by hand and cut it safely and confidently, so you're ready to bring the technique to your own sweaters.
Bring something small to practice on — your headband from the August 29th Colorwork class, your own colorwork swatch, or even just a wool swatch — and leave with the steek cut, secured, and (we promise) ready to go!
Materials Needed: Just bring your project! Everything else — reinforcement yarn, scissors, notions — is included in the class fee.
Experience Level: Adventurous beginner.
Skills Needed: A small piece of stranded colorwork already knit, with a few inches of floats to steek — your headband from our Colorwork class works perfectly, or bring your own swatch. Basic crochet helps but isn't required; we'll teach you what you need.
Skills Learned:
- Reinforcing a steek by hand
- Reinforcing a steek by machine
- Cutting a steek safely and confidently
- Finishing and securing steeked edges
*This class pairs beautifully with the August 29th Colorwork class — bring the headband you make there to cut into your first steek. But you don't need that class to join: any small piece of stranded colorwork will do (or even just a swatch of knitted wool yarn).
What if I can't make it?
We understand that things come up! All class fees are non-refundable, however, they can be partially applied to a different session or a different future class.
