Ever wondered how sock machines work? In this hands-on class, you'll get to experience the magic of machine-knit socks and learn how to turn a simple knitted tube into a finished pair!

Joann, our sock machine wizard, will provide a sock-machine-knit tube, and together we'll explore how to customize it to fit, determine the placement for your heels and toes, and use the afterthought heel and toe method to transform the tube into a wearable pair of socks. You'll learn how to cut into your knitted fabric, pick up stitches, shape your heels and toes, and finish your socks with techniques you can use on future projects.

Whether you're curious about sock machines or looking to add a new construction method to your sock-knitting toolkit, this class will help you take your sock skills in a new direction.

Experience Level: Intermediate

Prerequisites: This class is for experienced sock knitters. You must be comfortable with knitting, purling, SSK, K2tog, and the Kitchener stitch. Previous experience knitting socks is required.

What You'll Learn:

  • An introduction to machine-knit sock tubes
  • How to determine heel and toe placement for a proper fit
  • How to cut into a knitted tube and prepare it for finishing
  • How to pick up stitches and construct afterthought heels and toes
  • How to shape and finish your socks using traditional hand-knitting techniques
  • Tips and techniques for finishing a pair of socks with an afterthought heel

Materials Needed – Purchase Separately:

  • Approximately 400 yards of fingering-weight sock yarn, wound into a cake
  • Circular needles in US Size 1 or 1.5, or double-pointed needles in your preferred style
  • An additional set of US Size 1 or 1.5 double-pointed needles
  • Small, sharp scissors

Important Preparation:

  • Your yarn must be purchased or delivered to the shop by noon on the Friday before class so your sock tube can be prepared.
  • Sock tubes will be available in either 64 or 72 stitches. Please indicate your preferred stitch count when registering.
  • You may use a contrasting sock yarn for your heels and toes if you'd like to add a little extra color to your finished socks.
  • If you're making socks for someone else, please bring their shoe size and a paper tracing of their foot to help determine appropriate heel and toe placement.

Class Size: Limited to 8 participants to ensure plenty of individual instruction.

Included with Registration: One machine-knit sock tube, provided by the instructor.

Please Note: Instructions and links to helpful YouTube videos will be provided as a reference for the afterthought heel techniques covered in class. Participants should be familiar with the required knitting techniques before attending.
