Details

There's a particular kind of magic in wearing a sweater you knit stitch by stitch, sleeve by sleeve, with your own two hands. If you've been making hats, cowls, or scarves and thinking "maybe someday, a sweater" — this is the class that gets you there.

Linda will guide you from swatch to finished sweater using a top-down raglan construction — no seaming, no separate pieces to sew together, just one project that grows from your neckline down. Over five sessions, you'll pick your yarn and swatch, cast on and start the raglan increases that shape the yoke, divide for the body and sleeves, and finish with confidence.

We’ll be making the Compass Crew Sweater by Claire Jackson, a worsted weight sweater with gauge 18 stitches in 4 inches on US size 8 needles.

Some possible yarn ideas include Kelbourne Scout (non superwash wool), Malabrigo Rios (superwash wool), or Kelbourne Keystone (acrylic/wool blend).

When:

  • Session 1 — October 10: Pick yarn, review the pattern, start your swatch
  • Session 2 — October 24: Cast on, knit in the round, begin raglan increases
  • Session 3 — Nov 7th: Finish raglan increases, put sleeve stitches on hold, join the body
  • Session 4 — Nov 21: Sleeves
  • Session 5 — Dec 5: Finishing & celebration!

Meets every 2 weeks: October 10, 24, Nov 7th,  21, and Dec 5

Materials Needed: Linda will review with you what you need in the first session.  Depending on the yarn you choose for your project, will need size 6 & 7 or 7 & 8 circular needles, stitch markers, a spare set of needles or waste yarn to hold your sleeve stitches, and a tapestry needle for finishing.  Materials are not included in the class fee, but you will earn 100 extra loyalty points for your yarn purchase.

Experience Level: Confident beginner.

Skills Needed: Comfortable casting on, knitting and purling, and reading a written pattern. No sweater-knitting experience necessary.

Skills Learned:

  • Swatching and checking gauge
  • Knitting in the round
  • Raglan increases
  • Dividing for body and sleeves
  • Setting and finishing sleeves
  • Binding off, blocking, and finishing touches
